Trust in the heart, the self, and the process...

Background

Hey, I'm Jess. I have a Bachelor's in Computer Science from UC Berkeley, and a Master's degree in User-Centered Design from Brandeis University. I am currently working as a product designer for DJ-booking and event management platform, Gruuvv.

In my spare time, I sometimes punch things at a Kickboxing/MMA gym, play video games, and hang out with my partner and cat.

Design Philosophy

I've always been fascinated by "invisible things". You know - invisibility cloaks, invisible men, invisible labor. To me, design is one of those things that, when done well, is almost completely "invisible", and when done poorly is completely the opposite.

How many lives have been changed by great, poor, or a lack of design decisions? This is a question that admittedly keeps me up at 3am sometimes. Whether it's the design of layouts and systems in critical situations like operating rooms and cockpits, or the design of a dating app's messaging feature that affects the people who are brought into this world... the effects of design are vastly powerful and incomprehensible at times, like an eldritch horror. So in short, my existential and philosophical reasons for getting into design? 100% invisibility cloaks, Cthulhu and playing with fate.

About Cat

This is Anchovy aka, “Chove”. She is my muse, because every time I watch her jump up to a countertop 6 times her height to swoop an unattended piece of chicken with calculated, premeditated precision, I think to myself “Wow! What an absolute marvel of design!”

She’s an apex predator of various household bugs and mice toys on sticks. Mostly importantly, she would risk it all for a singular bite of human food.
